EU Projects: SMARTER Projects |
|
The
SMARTER Project that had ICAR among its Partner, has been finalised in July
2023 and produced two set of Guidelines under the guidance of Jean-Michel
Astruc:
Presently ICAR is involved in the Digi4Life EU project where is
leading a Task on "Approaches towards enabling data standardisation and
harmonisation"
|
Measuring, Recording and
Sampling Devices Sub-Committee (MRSD
SC) |
|
The MRSD SC met in October 2024 in Minnesota, US and welcomed
two new members to the group: Angie Lockwood, NMR [UK] and Jean-Marc
Nielsen, Lactanet [Canada]. A full listing of the MRSD-SC members and
Test Centre personnel, along with other useful links, may be found on this
landing page.

- Call for Annual Reports & Request for Review of ICAR
Device Listings
|
|
In addition, to call for annual reports from manufacturers, the MRSD SC
is asking manufacturers to review the current ICAR listings of certified
devices, including pictures along with installation and routine procedures
manuals. There are two pages:
certified devices for cows and
certified devices for sheep & goats.
Please email
any corrections or updates to
MRSD-SC@icar.org by December 31, 2024. ICAR is committed to
accurate and current listings as these pages and after review, will update
accordingly in early 2025. In addition, the listings of certified
robotic systems and sampler combinations will be redesigned in 2025

- ICAR Test Centre Software
|
|

During the recent
meeting of the the MRSD SC, it was agreed to expand and update the test
centre statistical software in 2025. This update will include
additional milk components and potential carry-over estimation based on the
effect of the previous sample. In addition, the software will be
expanded for all parameters to all species.

As a reminder, the
ICAR Test Centre Software is free to all manufacturers that are ICAR
Associate Members as an online tool.

- The Projects of the MRSD SC
|
|
In addition to testing and certification of devices/systems, the MRSD SC
is involved in a number of projects that will benefit ICAR members and
device manufacturers. These projects include:
- Quantification of carry-over in devices and publishing a best
practices guide for herd recording organisations.
- Development of data quality management tools to provide and
assurance to herd organisations and determine the suitability of data
use.
- Research
the effect of air admission in excess of ISO standards on the effect of
device and sampling accuracy along with publishing a best practices guide
for herd recording organisations.
- Quantification of milk
composition for various components across the milk
out.

- Webinar for the manufacturer
|
|
The MRSD SC is planning a webinar for all manufacturers in February or
March 2025. Suggestions for topics are welcome and the webinar will
include updates on all the projects mentioned in this brief update as well
as questions on the testing process.
|
Animal Identification Sub-Committee (AI
SC) |
|
In
the last 6 months, the AI SC has been engaged in
- Updating
of the Section 10 of the ICAR Guidelines. In the last meeting of the Board
on 20 and 21 October the Board endorsed them and presently the Section 10
has been circulated to the ICAR Members for collecting any comments or the
approval
- Procedure 6 of the ICAR Guidelines has been produced in its final
version and in the next weeks it will be circulated among Members to get
their approval
- The new
document on the Tag Loss Rate Calculation has been completed and it assures
a step forward in the Calculation process on the percentage of the tag
loss
For the
following months, the AI SC is committed to commence the Procedure 7
(Tissue sampling tag) and the Procedure 8 (Smart devices). For getting a
complete vision on the Tissue sampling tag, the AI SC believes that a tight
collaboration with the DNA WG has to be reinforced
|
Milk Analysis Sub-Committee (MA SC) |
|
In the last months the MA SC activity has been focussed
in:
- Finalising the review of the Section 12 of the ICAR Guidelines
(Protocol for the Evaluation of Milk Analysers for ICAR Certification
according to ISO 8196-3/IDF 128-3 )
- Reviewing the received applications for the ICAR certification of
milk analyses
- Reporting the work accomplished into the ExtraMIR FA WP1
group
- Reviewing the ICAR proficiency test service for milk
laboratories
- Launching a new ICAR proficiency test for Fatty acids
(GC+IR)
- Communicating the involvement of countries' experts, welcoming young
generation members, colleagues that wish joining our meetings as observers
(2 new members)
The MA SC
regularly meet every 6-8 weeks and also participated in the various
meetings on the ExtraMIR Fatty Acids .
For
the next months, the MA SC will :
- suggest
the open application for ICAR evaluation to other devices that can be used
for different purposes than milk recording e.g. farm management (broader
scope).
- plan
the ICAR conference in Anand, India 2025, including the ExtraMIR workshop
and the Milk Analysis technical session.
- fix the
progress towards the completion of ExtraMIR project for the 4 WP
groups.
- evaluate the ICAR proficiency test performances.
For the
months to come, the MA SC will explore what are the tools needed for farm
management that MASC can support in its development by adopting the milk
analysis in the laboratories

Artificial Insemination and related
Technologies (AI & RT WG) |
|
On December 4th, the Artificial
Insemination & RT WG is organising a webinar in occasion of the launch
of the service on the Bull Semen Proficiency Test. The same webinar will be
organised with two different timing. The recorded video is available here: |

In the
last months, the AI&RT WG participated in the following
meetings:
- NAAB
Technical Conference, held on 16-18 September 2024, in Madison,
USA)
- AI VETS
meeting that was organised on 16-17 October 2024, in Bonn,
Germany
|
|
|
The
activities achieved in the last months include:
- The
launch of the Bull Semen Proficiency Test that created lots of positive
response and additional discussions. Positive resulted have been achieved
in first registrations, having reached more than 25 participating
laboratories.
- Positive discussions with worldwide groups (NAAB, AI VETS) on
Straw ID standardization has been achieved
|
- Programmes for the next months
|
|
In the
next months the activities of the AI & RT will focus on:
- Completing the first Bull Semen Proficiency Test (webinar
December 4th, followed by actual production and distribution of the straws,
participants to perform the test, statistics by ICAR) Following the first
round of the BS PT, the WG will discuss the outcomes
-
Standardization of the Straw ID. It is clear what status is, but worldwide
not everyone is in the same position on how to move forward. Therefore a
new step will initiate, e.g. by starting from Europe
|
- Requested actions from the Board
|
|
The
proficiency test is just the beginning: it should lead to meaningful
follow-up discussions on how to utilize the results, which will naturally
reinvigorate the working group.
|
Feed and Gas (F&G WG) |
|
In the last few months, the attention of the F&G WG has been focussed
on:
- Transfer of the Guidelines from doc format to
wiki
- Working on updating the Guidelines for methane and feed
intake
- Interaction with Global Methane Genetics – data base
development, SOP development
- Development of BWYPE topics (Feed & Gas is involved in 4
submissions: Feed intake SOP, MIR together with ExtraMIR, Tech comparison
of methane measurements, global data collection and international genetic
evaluation of methane in sheep)

|
For the next months, the F&G WG is committed in
organising:
- Some webinars in collaboration with the Global Methane Genetics
Group
- The
improvements of
Guidelines of the BWYPE
- The improvement of the Guideline for feed intake and
methane
|
Functional Traits (FT WG) |
|
In the last months the FT WG had regular meetings with the
manufacturers within the ICAR-IDF Initiative on sensors, related to
functional traits and an internal meeting of the members of the FT WG is
planned for December 2024. This initiative will be soon presented at the
EAAP, ECPLF, ISRP meetings- A
manuscript on Improving animal health and welfare by using sensor data in
herd management and dairy cattle breeding has been finalised presenting the
joint initiative of ICAR and IDF (ECPLF, ICAR)
- The FT
WG is also focussed on using the case genetics and sharing the sensor data
as well as on the definition of rumination
- A
further point of attention is the Body Conditions Scoring with a first
proposal for recommendations for recording and use for herd management,
genetic improvement and welfare assessment

|
The
FT WG is committed in following with the ICAR-IDF initiative on sensors
related applied to functional traits by

Finalizing the use of case for genetics and for data sharing (sensor data)
- Finalizing
definitions and reference of standards rumination and the finalizing of the
BCS Guidelines
|
|
|
The FT WG is interested in physical meetings with manufactures even under
different topics such the AMS meetings- A close
interactions with ICAR Animal Data Exchange WG and the Measuring, Recording
and Sampling Devices Sub-Committee are expected
|
Sheep, Goats and Camelids (SGC
WG) |
|
The main priorities of the SGC WG are the:
- Finalisation of the Guidelines on wool recording whose first edition
was published in April 2024 as Section 23 of the ICAR
Guidelines
- Validation of the emendations on the Guidelines for performance
recording in dairy sheep and dairy goats" (Section 16 of the ICAR
Guidelines)

Production of the Guidelines on "Resilience in small ruminants"
basing on the work achieved in the EU SMARTER project. They are expected to
be finalised in 2025. - Planning
of the EU project
for a Reference Centre in small ruminants.
|

Interactions with other ICAR Groups
|
|
Tight
interaction are under development with the Conformation Recording WG for
producing Guidelines on the recording traits of sheep and goats
conformation. An ad hoc working group to address conformation in small
ruminants has been constituted aiming at the preparation of the
Guidelines on scoring conformation.- Interaction with DNA WG about the extension of GENOEX to other
species has been developed
- Interactions with Feed&Gas WG about recommendations on
efficiency in small ruminants are on-going.

DNA
WG |
|
The DNA WG has
initiataed some meetings with the ICAR Breed Association WG and with the
World Holstein Friesian Federation (WHFF) on standardization of Genetic
Abnormalities.- Some actions have been
achieved and finalised such as:
- The review of applications
and renewals for STR Parentage and SNP Genotyping
Certification.
- The launch of SNP based
Parentage Discovery Certification Service.
- The BWYPEX topic
submission. "Discovery, Approval and Management of Genetic Abnormalities in
Cattle"
- For the months to come, the
DNA WG is involved in:
- The Task Force for Genetic
Disease Tests
- The Task Force to explore
ICAR certification of sequence based genotyping.
- Exploring alternatives to
ISAG ring tests.
- Exploring the equine and
canine species to expand ICAR DNA certification services
- The DNA WG is interacting
with the Animal Identification SC for preparing a new set of Guidleines on
Tissue sampling.

Conformation Recording (CR WG) |
|
The CR WG focussed its attention
on:
- Updating
the guidelines with a group of goat specialists.
- Producing new Guidelines for sheep dairy and beef breeds; for this
reason a group of specialist on sheep conformation has been
formed
- Updating
the list of the conformation trait for dairy breed: adding udder balance
and front feet orientation.
- Following with the development of 3D images and derivation of
conformation traits.

Finalisation of the Guidelines on goats by updating the list of traits,
the trait definitions and the new drawings- Working
on the Guidelines for sheep and updating the list of conformation defects
with information from WHFF
|
