Alan Shearer: the greatest Premier League goalscorer of all

Dear Andreas,

I had good experience with using the method of Garcia-Cortes et al (2008) to infer the contribution of domestic and imported “genetics” in dairy and pig populations.

With regards, Gregor

Dear Andreas,

1-     Unfortunately, I do not have any reference to send to you, because:

a.      Either, they are spread over a large number of publications;

b.      Or, they are from unpublished results;

2-     I generally agree with what you write. However, the Swedish (SWE) experience (which is also true for the other Scandinavian countries and some other countries) can modify your statements:

a.      As you have mentioned, the genetic trend in the exporting country has, by far, the largest effect on the trend in the importing country (mainly through the importation of bull sires). However, this is true for the trait(s) included in the exporting country’s breeding objective. For example, the genetic trend for protein yield in SWE can be partially traced back to the trend in the USA;

b.      The modifying factor is that SWE has had an intensive breeding program for many functional traits, especially female fertility traits. My unpublished results are from around 2007-2008, and most of the data were from the time that functional traits had little weight in the US net merit index. My observations are:

                                                    i.     Genetic trend for milk production traits in SWE were a little smaller than the USA trend, i.e. USA showed higher genetic gain for these traits;

                                                   ii.     The trend for the functional traits in SWE were different from the USA trends. For the Ayrshire type breed (the so-call Red Dairy Cattle (RDC), or the Swedish designation SRB), with almost no importation from the USA, trends were positive, that is SWE managed to simultaneously improve both milk production traits and functional traits. For the Holstein, with significant importation from the USA, the genetic trend for the functional traits were flat or slightly improving in SWE. That is SWE managed to control the correlated negative trend in fertility;

                                                  iii.     The Calo-type genetic correlation between milk production traits and functional traits were (somehow difficult to interpret) more negative in the USA than in SWE.

                                                  iv.     You can easily calculate all the above from the official results of the international breeding values published by the Interbull Centre. Please use the combination of country code in the ID, the number of domestic daughters, and birth year to compare the trends for different time periods, as I suspect that the USA bulls born after 2004 may show different trends (the official international genetic evaluations for “real” functional traits started between 2004 and 2007);

3-     My general conclusion is that differences between the breeding objectives in the exporting and importing countries can be compared to a situation where male and female “specialized lines” are selected for different traits, and then crossed to achieve a higher total merit index in the crossbred population.

Best regards,

Hossein

Subject: [Agdg-list] Reference on impact of selection in breeding programs with regular import of genetics

Dear colleagues

I had a discussion with colleagues on the impact of performance testing and selection efforts in a breeding program that regularly imports genetics from another population.

In my understanding the long term impact is small as the genetic trend is determined by the trend in the population where the imports are coming from. The higher the proportion of imported genetics, the smaller the gap between the two populations and the faster we reach the same trend in the importing population. These facts can be easily shown in a spreadsheet calculation.

I was looking for some reference (text book, paper) that is discussing this issue, but could not find one so far.

I am sure that there are people out there that know such references and I am very grateful for any hints.

Thanks and best wishes, Andreas
